Must-Have Gear for Stunning Outdoor Travel Photography

Hey there, fellow adventurers!  Having reliable and versatile equipment is essential for someone who loves exploring and capturing the beauty of the natural world. Here’s a peek into what’s currently in my camera bag and why I trust these items to help me capture breathtaking moments on the go.

Langly Globetrotter Camera Bag

First and foremost, my trusty Langly Globetrotter Camera Bag. This bag is not just about style; it’s rugged, spacious, and perfect for all my adventures. Its weatherproof material keeps all my gear safe from the elements, whether hiking through a dense forest or exploring urban landscapes. Not only is this a great camera backpack, but it is also my preferred bag to use as a personal item while traveling. The 2-compartment construction allows me to fit so much when packing for trips, especially if opting for a carry-on-only type of trip. I have had my Langly bag for over 5 years, and I highly recommend it for your photography and travel needs.

Canon EOS R6 Mark II Mirrorless Camera

The heart of my photography setup is the Canon EOS R6 Mark II Mirrorless Camera. This camera’s incredible low-light performance, fast autofocus, and high-speed continuous shooting make it ideal for capturing wildlife and dynamic outdoor scenes. It is a versatile powerhouse that handles everything I throw at it. When upgrading my camera gear a few years ago, I researched extensively to find the right camera body.

I have always shot on Canon products, from the PowerShot digital cameras to my first DSLR (T3i) which I shot with for over 10 years. Needless to say, I needed an upgrade on my gear. The Canon R6 Mark II checked all of the boxes for me. I had been looking into Sony’s mirrorless cameras and lenses, however, I did not want to switch brands. In my research, I discovered that Canon had now come out with its line of mirrorless cameras and lenses. The R5 has always been a coveted camera to have, but I was hesitant about dropping a large sum of money when I knew that I also wanted to upgrade my lenses. I kept going back to the R6 Mark II. It is a camera that is the Goldilocks of cameras- not too cheap and not too expensive…just right. And, it offered all of the features that I was looking for in an upgrade for my T3i.  If I ever did decide to upgrade further to the R5, any lenses I would purchase for the R6 Mark II would also be compatible. After using the R6 Mark II for a few years now, it is worth the upgrade from my T3i!

Canon RF50mm F1.8 STM Lens

They don’t call this lens the “nifty fifty” for nothing! For those crisp portraits and stunning bokeh shots, the Canon RF50mm F1.8 STM lens is a must-have. It’s lightweight and compact, making it perfect for travel. This lens is great for capturing the essence of a location or the personality of a person. The Canon RF50mm F1.8 STM is a great (and inexpensive in comparison) lens to add to your set of camera lenses.

Canon RF 15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM Lens

When I need to capture expansive landscapes or architecture, the Canon RF 15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM lens is my go-to. Its ultra-wide zoom range and image stabilization help me get sharp, distortion-free images even in challenging conditions. Since I mainly shoot landscapes, this is my absolute favorite lens, and is on my Canon R6 Mark II camera body almost all the time!

Canon RF 24-70MM F2.8L IS USM Lens

The Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM lens is a versatile all-rounder. Whether I’m shooting landscapes, portraits, or action shots, this lens delivers exceptional image quality. Its fast aperture and image stabilization make it a reliable companion for all my photography needs. If you need a lens for an array of different scenarios, this is the lens for you.

Canon Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R

One of the most versatile tools in my camera bag is the Canon Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. This adapter allows me to use my EF lenses with my EOS R system while adding a customizable control ring to the setup. The ring can be programmed to adjust settings like aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation, giving me quick access to key functions without taking my eye off the viewfinder. This handy adapter is an essential part of my kit and makes it possible for me to still use the EF lenses that I previously used with my Canon T3i, seamlessly bridging the gap between my older lenses and the newer mirrorless body.

Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens

The Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens is a powerful addition to my camera bag, perfect for capturing distant subjects with clarity. You will notice that this lens is an EF lens, as opposed to my other RF lenses, and one that I used when I was shooting with the Canon T3i. Since I did not want to purchase another zoom lens just yet, I opted for using the 75-300mm with the R6 Mark II. Now, this is where the “Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R” comes into play. With the adapter, I can use any of my EF lenses with the R mirrorless camera bodies. So, whether I’m photographing wildlife, landscapes, or even candid shots from afar, this lens delivers impressive reach and versatility. Its lightweight design makes it easy to carry on long hikes, and the zoom range provides flexibility in framing shots without needing to switch lenses. While it’s not as fast as some of my other lenses, it’s a reliable (and more cost-effective)  option for those moments when I need to get closer to the action, and it helps that I can reuse a lens that was already part of my collection!

SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Memory Card

To store all those high-resolution images and videos, I rely on the SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I memory card. It’s fast, reliable, and offers ample space for a day’s worth of shooting. Plus, its durability ensures my data is safe, even in tough environments. For me, this is a great size to have for shooting in RAW format because it is large enough to hold 1000s of photos, but also not too large to slow my computer down when transferring files to my external hard drive. I purchased two of these memory cards for the Canon R6 Mark II because a very cool feature of the camera is that it can hold two memory cards at once! So when you run out of space on one card, the photos are automatically added to the second memory card. Such a great feature!

Canon LP-E6NH Battery

Keeping my camera powered throughout the day is essential, so I always carry extra Canon LP-E6NH batteries. These batteries provide long-lasting power, ensuring I never miss a shot. I tend to charge my battery at night to make sure that I am ready for a full day of shooting, but it does not hurt to have a second (or third) battery ready to go when traveling or on the go.

LaCie Rugged 5TB Portable External HDD

Backing up my photos is crucial, especially during long trips. The LaCie Rugged 5TB portable external HDD is my backup solution. It’s shock, dust, and rain resistant, making it perfect for the rough and tumble of travel photography. I store most of my photos for Wander & Wilde on these hard drives, which have proven to be a trusty sidekick while creating blog posts! Be sure to always make sure to eject before disconnecting to keep the hard drive in good condition, and you will be good to go with storing all of your files on these.
